Ask Deana: Aging Gracefully, Not Aggressively
Ladies, we need to have a little conversation about exfoliation.
You know that feeling when your skin starts looking dull, your makeup doesn't sit quite right, and those fine lines seem to have invited a few friends over?
Naturally, you might think it's time to grab a scrub and get to work.
But hold on, beautiful!
Your face is not a kitchen floor, and we are certainly not going to scrub away 20 years with a washcloth!
As a licensed esthetician and owner of Body and Soul Wellness Center in Manchester, NH, I love helping women understand what their changing skin actually needs.
And here's something I wish every woman over 40 knew.
More exfoliation is not always better. The right exfoliation is what matters.
Should You Exfoliate More as You Age?
The short answer is no, not necessarily.
As we get older, our skin's natural cell turnover tends to slow down. Changes in hydration, hormones, and the skin's protective barrier can also affect how our complexion looks and feels.
You may begin noticing:
Dull or tired looking skin
Rough or uneven texture
More noticeable fine lines
Dryness or dehydration
Makeup settling into textured areas
Skin that seems more sensitive to products
Exfoliation can help remove accumulated surface skin cells and reveal a smoother, brighter appearance.
But here's the catch.
Over exfoliating can actually make things worse!
Too much scrubbing or too many exfoliating products can irritate your skin, disrupt its protective barrier, and contribute to redness, dryness, and sensitivity.
And who has time for that nonsense?
The goal is not to strip your skin. It's to help your skin look and feel its best.
Dermaplaning for Mature Skin: Goodbye, Dullness. Hello, Smooth Skin!
Let's talk about one of my favorite ways to refresh the appearance of skin without getting aggressive.
Dermaplaning!
This professional exfoliating treatment uses a specialized blade to gently remove accumulated surface skin cells and that lovely little peach fuzz that seems determined to make an appearance.
Seriously, who invited that?
Dermaplaning can help:
Improve the appearance of dull skin
Create a smoother looking surface
Temporarily remove fine facial hair
Help makeup apply more evenly
Leave skin feeling soft and refreshed
For women noticing changes in skin texture after 40, 45, or 50, dermaplaning may be a wonderful option.
But it isn't for everyone. Active breakouts, irritated skin, and certain skin conditions may make it inappropriate until the skin has settled.
At Body and Soul Wellness Center, I look at your skin first and determine whether dermaplaning fits your needs.
Because your treatment should be about your skin, not simply checking another birthday off the calendar!

Professional Peels: Do I Really Have to Peel Like a Snake?
Oh, ladies, this question makes me smile!
When some people hear the words chemical peel, they picture bright red skin, sheets of peeling, and hiding in the house for a week.
Not every peel works that way.
Professional peels come in different formulations and strengths. Some are designed for more superficial exfoliation, while stronger treatments may require additional recovery time.
At Body and Soul Wellness Center, I offer professional Dermalogica peel options that can be selected according to your skin's condition, concerns, and treatment goals.
Depending on the treatment, a professional peel may help improve the appearance of:
Fine lines
Uneven skin tone
Rough texture
Dullness
Certain dark spots and discoloration
Congested looking skin
And here's the important part.
A stronger peel is not automatically a better peel.
Your skin's sensitivity, recent sun exposure, current products, medications, and overall condition all matter when deciding which treatment is appropriate.
Sometimes gentle is exactly what your skin needs.

Dermaplaning or a Professional Peel: Which Is Better for Aging Skin?
Well, that depends on what your skin is telling us!
Dermaplaning focuses on removing surface buildup and fine facial hair. It can be especially helpful when your skin feels rough, looks dull, or you want a smoother surface for makeup.
Professional peels use exfoliating ingredients to target concerns such as uneven texture, dullness, fine lines, and certain types of discoloration.
One treatment is not automatically better than the other.
And while some treatments can be combined in carefully selected situations, that doesn't mean everyone needs multiple forms of exfoliation during one appointment.
Sometimes your skin simply needs a customized facial with hydration and nourishment.
That's why I believe in looking at the whole picture instead of grabbing the strongest treatment on the shelf.
Signs You Might Be Exfoliating Too Much
Let's have a little skin reality check.
If your skin is feeling tight, burning when you apply products, looking unusually shiny but dry, or becoming more red and irritated, your exfoliation routine could be part of the problem.
More products are not always the solution.
Sometimes the smartest thing you can do is give your skin a break.
A gentle cleanser, a good moisturizer, and daily sunscreen can be more valuable than adding another scrub or acid.
If irritation continues, it is worth speaking with a dermatologist.
And please, don't assume that tingling or burning means a product is working harder.
Your skin shouldn't have to suffer to look beautiful!
How Often Should Women Over 40 or 50 Exfoliate?
There isn't one magic schedule that works for everyone.
Your ideal routine depends on your skin type, sensitivity, the exfoliating products you use, your other treatments, and how your skin responds.
A woman with dry, sensitive skin may need a completely different approach from someone with thicker, oilier skin.
If you're already using exfoliating acids or other active skin care products, adding more exfoliation may be too much.
My advice?
Stop counting how many times you exfoliate and start paying attention to how your skin feels.
Healthy looking skin is the goal, not winning a competition for the most products in your bathroom!

Frequently Asked Questions About Exfoliation and Mature Skin
1. Should I exfoliate more often after age 40 or 50?
Not necessarily. Although skin cell turnover tends to slow with age, exfoliation should be based on your skin's condition, sensitivity, and current routine. More frequent exfoliation can lead to irritation rather than better results.
2. Is dermaplaning good for mature skin?
Dermaplaning can be beneficial for some women with mature skin because it removes surface buildup and fine facial hair, helping skin appear smoother and brighter. A professional skin assessment helps determine whether it is appropriate for you.
3. Are professional chemical peels safe for women over 50?
Age alone does not determine whether someone is a good candidate for a professional peel. Skin condition, health history, current products, and the type and strength of the peel all matter. Proper assessment and professional application are important.
4. Does dermaplaning make facial hair grow back thicker?
No. Dermaplaning removes hair at the surface. It does not change the hair follicle or make the hair grow back thicker or darker.
5. Will a professional peel help with fine lines and uneven skin tone?
Certain professional peels can improve the appearance of superficial fine lines, uneven texture, and some types of discoloration. Results vary based on the treatment and individual skin concerns.
6. Can I get dermaplaning and a chemical peel together?
Sometimes, but combining treatments increases the amount of exfoliation your skin receives. Whether it is appropriate depends on your skin's condition, the treatments selected, and your professional's assessment.
7. Where can I get dermaplaning and professional peels near Manchester, NH?
Body and Soul Wellness Center in Manchester, NH, offers professional dermaplaning, customized facials, and Dermalogica professional peel options. Services are personalized for clients from Manchester and nearby communities, including Bedford, Hooksett, Goffstown, and Londonderry.
