Have you ever hit that first stretch of cool fall weather, looked in the mirror and thought, “Well...where did my glow go?”
You are definitely not imagining things.
Fall can be beautiful here in New Hampshire, but the change in weather is not always quite as pretty for our skin. Cooler temperatures, lower humidity, windy days and indoor heat can all change the way your skin looks and feels.
And once we reach our 40s, 50s and beyond, those seasonal changes can become a little more noticeable.
Your skin may suddenly feel tighter. Makeup may not sit quite as smoothly. Fine lines can seem more noticeable. Maybe your skin just looks tired or dull even though nothing major has changed in your routine.
This is one of those times when I remind my clients that your skin is not misbehaving. It is responding to its environment.
And fortunately, there are ways to help.
At Body and Soul Wellness Center in Manchester, NH, my approach is simple: aging gracefully, not aggressively.
I want your skin to look healthy, refreshed and cared for while still looking completely like you.
One of the biggest changes in fall is humidity.
During the warmer months, there is generally more moisture in the air. As temperatures drop, the air becomes drier. Then we start turning on the heat inside our homes, offices and cars.
All of that can contribute to moisture loss from the skin.
When your skin becomes dehydrated, it may look less plump and reflective. Instead of having that fresh glow, the surface can begin looking flat, rough or dull.
You may also notice:
Tightness after cleansing
Rough or flaky areas
Makeup settling differently
Fine lines appearing more noticeable
Increased sensitivity
A tired appearance
Skin that feels dry even when you are using moisturizer
Sometimes the answer is not adding more and more products.
Sometimes your skin simply needs the right products and a little professional attention.
Our skin naturally changes as we get older.
Collagen production gradually decreases, cell renewal slows and the skin may not hold onto moisture quite as easily as it once did.
That does not mean your skin suddenly needs to be attacked with every strong treatment available.
Quite the opposite.
Mature skin often responds beautifully when we focus on consistency, hydration, gentle exfoliation and treatments selected for what the skin actually needs.
That is why I always look at the person in front of me rather than following the exact same facial routine for everyone.
Your skin at 45 may need something completely different from someone else's skin at 45.
And your October skin may need something different from your July skin.
Yes, when it is done appropriately.
Dead skin cells naturally accumulate on the surface of the skin. When cell turnover slows, that buildup can make the complexion appear rough or dull.
Gentle exfoliation can help remove some of that buildup and reveal smoother, brighter looking skin underneath.
But this is also where people sometimes get themselves into trouble at home.
If your skin looks dull, your first instinct may be to scrub harder, exfoliate more often or start stacking several active products together.
More is not always better.
Over exfoliating can compromise the skin barrier and leave your skin feeling even drier, tighter or more sensitive.
This is why professional skin analysis can be so helpful. We can determine whether your skin needs exfoliation, hydration, calming ingredients or a combination of several approaches.
There is not one facial that is perfect for everyone.
That is exactly why I offer customized facials at Body and Soul Wellness Center in Manchester, NH.
When you come in, I look at what your skin is doing right now.
Maybe you need more hydration.
Maybe you have surface buildup that needs gentle exfoliation.
Maybe summer left behind some congestion, uneven texture or pigmentation.
Or maybe your skin simply needs a really good reset along with an hour where you can stop taking care of everyone else for a change.
Your facial can be customized based on your skin condition, sensitivity and goals.
Professional treatments may include cleansing, exfoliation, hydration, specialized masques, massage, professional skin care products and other techniques depending on what is appropriate for your skin.
My goal is never to make you look like someone else.
I want you to leave looking refreshed, rested and naturally radiant.
Usually, yes, but you may not need to change everything.
Your skin care routine should change as your skin changes.
Fall may be the time to reconsider the cleanser you are using, increase hydration or change the way you exfoliate.
A few simple adjustments can often make a noticeable difference.
Use a gentle cleanser.
If your skin feels tight immediately after cleansing, your cleanser may be removing more than your skin needs.
Add hydration.
Look for products that help attract and retain moisture in the skin.
Do not over exfoliate.
More exfoliation does not automatically mean more glow.
Pay attention to your skin barrier.
If your skin feels irritated, tight or sensitive, it may need support rather than another active ingredient.
Keep wearing sunscreen.
Yes, even in New Hampshire in October.
I know the flip flops may be gone and the pumpkin decorations are out, but your sunscreen does not get the season off. 😊
Collagen is one of the proteins that helps give our skin structure and firmness.
As we age, natural collagen production decreases. Sun exposure over the years can also contribute to visible changes in the skin.
This is one reason fine lines, changes in texture and loss of firmness can become more noticeable over time.
Professional skin treatments and a consistent home care routine can help support the appearance and overall condition of mature skin.
But healthy aging does not mean trying to erase every line.
Those smile lines have probably earned their place.
My philosophy is about supporting the skin you have so it can look healthy, hydrated and vibrant.
There is so much pressure today to constantly correct, tighten, inject, peel, resurface or change something about ourselves.
That is not what skin care has to be.
Professional skin care can simply be about taking care of yourself.
It can be about maintaining healthy looking skin, addressing concerns as they come up and giving yourself permission to slow down for an hour.
At Body and Soul Wellness Center, I believe there is plenty of room between doing nothing and doing everything.
That middle ground is where thoughtful skin care lives.
And that is usually where I like to start.
If your skin has started looking dull, dry or tired this fall, a customized facial may be exactly what it needs.
I work with clients from Manchester, Bedford, Goffstown, Hooksett, Londonderry, Merrimack and surrounding Southern New Hampshire communities who want professional skin care without feeling pressured to completely change the way they look.
Together, we can look at what your skin is doing now and create a treatment approach that makes sense for you.
No chasing perfection.
No trying to look 25 again.
Just healthy, cared for skin and a little time that is completely yours.
And maybe a few laughs while you are here.
That part comes free. 💗

Lower humidity, cooler temperatures, indoor heating, dehydration and surface skin cell buildup can all contribute to dull looking skin during the fall.
Dehydrated skin can appear less plump, which may temporarily make fine lines and texture more noticeable. Supporting hydration can help the skin appear smoother and refreshed.
The best facial depends on your individual skin condition and concerns. A customized facial can address hydration, texture, congestion, dryness and other age related skin concerns based on what your skin needs at the time of your appointment.
Many clients enjoy professional facial care approximately once a month, although the ideal schedule depends on your skin, home routine, budget and treatment goals.
Facials can help improve the appearance of dull skin through professional cleansing, exfoliation, hydration and customized treatment techniques.
Not necessarily. Too much exfoliation can cause dryness and irritation. The goal is appropriate exfoliation based on your skin's condition rather than simply exfoliating more often.
Yes. Ultraviolet exposure occurs throughout the year, so daily sunscreen remains an important part of a consistent skin care routine.
